Why Sweaters Are a Sourcing Minefield Right Now
Planning a fall/winter collection? You are not alone — and you are not imagining that sweater sourcing has gotten harder. With the IMF lowering global growth forecasts in July and apparel imports under pressure, factories are behaving differently: big mills push minimums up, smaller ones disappear, and quality becomes a lottery.
After nearly 20 years of making knitwear for brands at our Jiangsu factory, here are the five things every brand owner should know before sending a sweater tech pack — the stuff nobody tells you on the first call.
1. MOQ Is the First Question, Not the Last
Most sweater mills want 500-1,000 pieces per colorway. If you are a startup or boutique brand, that is your entire season’s budget tied up in one style. We work from 100 pieces per style — enough to test a market without betting the company.
2. “Luxury Feel” Has a Budget Hack
Want that soft, expensive hand-feel without the cashmere price tag? A 5% cashmere / 95% wool blend feels close to 100% cashmere at a fraction of the cost. It is the single most common upgrade we do for emerging brands — and it sells.
3. Color Is Coming Back — Plan for It
After years of beige and minimalism, this season’s trend reports point back to color. That is great for standing out, but it means more lab dips, more color approvals, and a factory that actually understands Pantone matching. Ask about their lab dip turnaround before you commit.
4. Timing Is Everything
Yarn approval (2-3 weeks), lab dips (1-2 weeks), fit samples (2-3 rounds) — a sweater needs 4-6 months from tech pack to delivery. If you are already late, a smaller factory with flexible production can compress that timeline. Big mills rarely can.
5. Quality Issues to Watch (and Ask About)
- Pilling — Ask what pilling test grade their yarn passes. This is the #1 sweater complaint
- Shrinkage — Know your wash test results before bulk, not after
- Color fading — Insist on color fastness reports for deep shades like navy and red
